The invention relates to the bedding of the crankshaft (9) of an internal combustion engine in the region of the flywheel. To prevent stress and the resultant bending strains in the crankshaft (9) due to the weight of the flywheel mass, the crank pin (10) on which the fly wheel mass acts, which is mounted radially in the crankshaft bearing in the adjacent wall (10) of the crank case, is also mounted in an additional external bearing (6) arranged between the crankshaft bearing (4) and the flywheel mass. The flywheel mass is constructed as a potshaped flywheel the centre of gravity of which is located in the region of the external bearing (6). The weight of the flywheel mass is therefore supported almost completely by the external bearing (6). Only small supporting forces due to deformation of the crank pin (1) act on the crankshaft bearings (3, 4) located in the crank case.
