A method of picking up pastry articles (2) being delivered on a conveyor belt (4) of a packaging machine (1) and held back by a detent above the belt (4), by means of a transferring device comprising a plurality of paddles (9) carried at pitch distances of an endless chain (10) having a working run (13) which extends above the conveyor belt (4) crosswise thereto, comprises the step of increasing the paddle (9) pitch distance across the detent. This method results in the articles (2) being picked up in an uncommonly gentle and fast manner. The paddles are mounted on the chain (10) by a parallelogram linkage (21), (25), (28) and (29). A cam follower (33) fixed to link (29) follows a track which causes the linkage to pivot to accelerate the paddle during the transfer of the article from the belt (4) to the transverse conveyor. <IMAGE>
