PRODUCTION OF AZETIDINONE DERIVATIVE

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for antibacterial agent in short steps and high selectivity and yield by reacting a derivative of alpha-amino-beta-hydroxybutyric acid with a specific aldehyde and cyclizing the reaction product by reacting with a glycine derivative. CONSTITUTION:The objective azetidinone derivative of formula VII or formula VIII can be produced by reacting a compound of formula I (R<1> is H or OH- protecting group; R<2> is H or carboxy-protecting group) (e.g. D-threonine) or a compound of formula II (e.g. L-threonine) with a compound of formula III [R is group of formula IV (R<3> is alkyl or aryl) or formula V] (e.g. cinnamaldehyde) and reacting the reaction product with a compound of formula VI (R<4> is azido or protected amino) or its reactive derivative at the carboxyl group. The compound is useful as a production intermediate for 7-acylamino-2- oxaisocephem derivative known as an antibacterial agent.
