Luminaire without electrodes for coupling to a small lamp

A lamp without electrodes which couples strong microwave fields to a very small lamp having a diameter of approximately 1/2" or less. The lamp is operated in a mode which is independent of the height of the hollow space and which provides electrical field lines which run parallel to the height. Compared to earlier lamps, the height of the hollow space is reduced considerably so as to ensure strong coupling of the electrical field to the lamp.
