Device for connecting a thread to a surgical needle

A device for connecting a thread wound around a coil to a surgical needle comprises advance rollers for unwinding the thread from the coil, a tubular chuck for tensioning the thread if required, a guide means for guiding the front thread end, an advance device for keeping the needle such that a recess formed in its rear end surface faces the front thread end, and a fastening device with tensioning jaws for compression of the rear needle end in order to clamp the thread in the recess. By moving the needle to the guide means the front thread end is inserted in the recess in the needle, and by actuation of the fastening device the rear end of the needle is then compressed such that the thread is clamped in the recess. The thread is then unwound from the coil by a predeterminable length, in that the advance device is moved away from the guide means, and the thread is finally cut off along an inclined line.
