PURPOSE:To provide an agent for suppressing cholesterol level, containing an anion exchange resin having a specific composition as an active component, capable of selectively bonding with bile acid and exhibiting strong action to suppress the increase of total cholesterol level in serum. CONSTITUTION:The objective cholesterol-lowering agent having the above effects contains, as active component, an anion exchange resin containing the monomer units of the formulas I-IV (R<1>-R<3> are H, lower alkyl or benzyl; R<4> is H, lower alkyl or CH2OH; X is halogen) in an amount of 60-95mol% for I, 0-25mol% for II, 0-30mol% for III and 1-6mol% for IV, preferably a wholly porous resin having >=70 equivalent % of dimethylbenzylammonium group as anion exchange group, a total ion exchange capacity of >=1m-equivalent per 1g of dried gel, containing crosslinked polymer matrix having styrene and divinylbenzene as main monomer units and having pores corresponding to the rejection critical molecular weight of 800-20,000 for polyethylene oxide in a state swollen in an aqueous solution. |
