The motor to be driven has a main winding (3), in parallel with which there is an auxiliary winding (4) in series with an operating capacitor (8). A mains switch (1) is connected on the input side to a mains voltage source and, on the motor side, to the parallel-connected winding ends of the main winding and auxiliary winding. Switching means (5, 9 or 10, 9' respectively) are provided in the circuit of the main winding for limiting only the winding voltage of the main winding in the start-up phase of the motor. In addition, a current relay (6) is provided in the circuit of the main winding, via the switching contact (62) of which relay a start-up capacitor (6) connected in parallel with the operating capacitor (8) can be switched into the circuit of the auxiliary winding. <IMAGE>
