<p>PURPOSE: To deactivate an AIDS-causing virus prior to the use of blood for transfusion of the blood to a receiving patient or before the preparation of blood products by adding an effective amount of a quaternary ammonium salt to the whole donated blood. CONSTITUTION: Prior to transfusion of blood to a receiving patient or before the use of donated blood in the production of blood products, an active amount of a quaternary ammonium salt is added to the whole blood. A dimethylalkylbenzalkonium halide is preferable as the quaternary ammonium salt and benzalkonium chloride, an alkylpyridium halide and cetylpyridium chloride are most preferable. For example, 0.03g of cetylpyridium chloride based on 1mL of blood is dissolved in a Ringer's solution to give a solution, which is added to the whole blood. After about one to two hours, the AIDS virus in the blood is deactivated.</p> |
