PURPOSE: To analyze a blood sample quickly and automatically using a minimum volume of sample by providing an opaque barrier wall between two porous media across which diffusion takes place. CONSTITUTION: A substrate 9 supports a porous medium of specified volume. The medium may be an aqueous gel 10 in case of analysis of blood. A droplet of blood sample 11 to be analyzed is then placed on the gel 10. After the gel 10 is saturated with plasma from the blood sample 11, the remaining blood sample 11 is removed from the surface of gel 10 and the substrate 9. A second transparent substrate 18 supports a second gel 19 containing a reagent required for causing reaction on an analyte. The substrates 9, 18 are then arranged closely each other on the opposite sides of an opaque layer 25. When the reagent begins to react on the analyte, the opaque layer 25 is drawn out from between the gels 10, 19 as shown by an arrow 26. Consequently, the sample spreads from the gel 10 to the gel 19 and the analyte in sample is determined by utilizing the coloring. |
