A bill discriminating apparatus has a light emitter (5) for emitting light onto bills (B) and two color detectors (10a, 10b) for detecting light components contained in light emitted from the light emitter and transmitted through or reflected by the bills and having different wavelengths. The bill discriminating apparatus further includes two reference color detectors (7a, 7b) for detecting light components contained in light emitted from the light emitter (5) and having different wavelengths, a correction value calculator (9) for calculating a ratio of the signals output from the two reference color detectors (7a, 7b), a corrector (12) for correcting the signals output from one of the color detectors (10a, 10b) based upon the signals output from the correction value calculator, a differential amplifier (13) for differentially amplifying a difference between the signals output from the corrector and the signals output from the other of the two color detectors, a divider (14) for dividing the signals output from the differential amplifier (13) by the signals output from the other of the two color detectors and a discriminator (15) for discriminating denominations and/or genuineness of the bills based upon the signals output from the divider. <IMAGE>
