SYNTHETIC HOMO- AND HETEROPOLYSACCHARIDES AND A METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION THEREOF

Mono- and polysaccharides comprising one to about 20 saccharide units which also contain a reducing carbon atom are reacted with 3-halo-1,2-propandiol in the presence of a cationic exchange resin to form 3-halo-2-hydroxypropyl glycosides or glycidyl glycosides. These glycosides react with natural polysaccharides such as starch and plant gums to form novel synthetic homo- and heteropolysaccharides with pendant saccharide side chains.
