<p>The field joint (10) comprises two bare metal end portions of insulated pipes (11, 12) welded together. The field joint insulation (20/40) covers the bare metal in a time of 10 to 15 minutes. It comprises a preformed insulated infil which locates around the bare metal and an anti-corrosion coating between the infil and the metal pipe. In one embodiment the infil (41) is preformed on a mandrel and split longitudinally. In another embodiment, the infil (21) is of PVC foam (15), striated on one side (grooves 30 and bars 31) so that it can wrap round the metal field joint and covered on its other (outer) side by a protective coating (16) which is waterproof and abrasion resistant.</p> |
