The invention achieves the object of devising a switching system which meets the requirements imposed on a modern packet-switching system and which simultaneously guarantees compatibility with a switching network. The basic notion is to apply the principle of virtual links, even in the case of packet links within the switching system, and to allocate a dedicated through-connected channel to each link. A packet switching device (11...16) with a demultiplexing or multiplexing function is in each case located at the input and output of the switching system. The switching per se is performed in a switching device (20). Compatibility with a switching network is achieved automatically.
