The invention relates to spraying apparatuses in which a free-flowing material and a gas under pressure pass out of a spraying head (11) for the purpose of atomised application of the material to an article. In known apparatuses of this type, the start and the termination of the material feed and gas feed occur in each case simultaneously. This has the disadvantage at the finish of the spraying that complete atomisation does not take place and small residual material particles remain adhering to the nozzle (12) and dry hard on the latter. The invention is to avoid these disadvantages. The invention provides a spraying apparatus in which the gas outlet can be closed with a temporal delay after the material outlet. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for the corresponding control of the spraying apparatus, in that the material feed and gas feed are indeed released simultaneously but an annular channel (13) for the passing out of the gas is closed only after closing of the nozzle (12) for passing out of the material. The spraying apparatus according to the invention is particularly suitable for applying atomised lacquers (paints), adhesives or oils to an article.
