In a method for the contactless measurement of the external dimensions of bodies, the body (measurement object) is scanned by a parallel light beam. For this purpose, parallel light is directed onto a slit diaphragm (D), in front of or behind which there is arranged a rotatable, drivable disc (DS) which is equipped with a spiral slot (SS) cutting the slit of the slit diaphragm. The cooperation between the slit diaphragm and the rotating spirally slotted disc produces a pin hole diaphragm (LB) which is moved along the slit at a constant rate when the disc rotates at a constant speed. The external dimension of the measurement object is determined from the time which the beam passing the pin hole diaphragm requires in order to cover the measurement object. <IMAGE>
