Method comprises reacting a non-cylic conjugated 4-10C diene with O2 in an organic inert solvent in the presence of a catalyst of formula: RxM(L)y z. In the formula, R is an organic ligand, e.g. 1-8C alkyl, aryl, alkene, diene or alkylene; M is a Gp. IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB or VIII transition metal element; x is 0, 1 or 2; y is 0-6; x + y is 1-6; z is 1-6; L is not defined. Prod. is used as a raw material for producing synthetic resins.
