Novel compounds of formula <FORM:1114223/C2/1> wherein X is H, C1- 3 alkyl or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine cation are prepared by reduction of a ketone of formula <FORM:1114223/C2/2> optionally with saponification of an ester and/or salt formation. The ketones of the last formula above are prepared either by reaction in the hot of valeryl chloride, AlCl3 and the p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivative or by a Fries rearrangement of a p-n-butylcarboxybenzoic acid ester. The p-n-butylcarboxybenzoic acid ester is prepared by action of valeryl chloride on the p-hydroxy compound in the cold. Pharmaceutical compositions in conventional forms comprise an above novel compound and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent and have choleretic action and spasmolytic effects with some antibacterial activity.
