PURPOSE:To achieve reproduction with fidelity by predicting a reproduced image based on an image area and its background area and determining exposure quantity. CONSTITUTION:An original is metered to determine the image area and/or back ground area. A value featuring density in the background area and density featuring these areas are calculated and added to determine an exposure control value. Based on the determined value, the exposure quantity of scanning light is controlled to copy an original. When the exposure quantity is determined, it is preferable that image reproducibility characteristics and reproducibility control characteristics are utilized. Thus, the image area and its background area of a color original can be reproduced with fidelity or in a way that a user wants. |
