In a method for controlling display devices with picture elements, arranged in the shape of a matrix, and non-linear series elements, line multiplex signals being fed to conductors forming the lines of the matrix, and column multiplex signals being fed to conductors forming the columns of the matrix, the picture elements of in each case one line being controlled simultaneously and the picture elements in each case assigned to a column being controlled one after the other within a predetermined period and the respective picture elements being furthermore controlled or not controlled as a function of the absolute value of the respective difference between the line multiplex signals and column multiplex signals, the sign of the difference is changed a plurality of times during the predetermined period.
