The sensor has an inert, oxygen-permeable membrane 7 with a cathodic gold or platinum coating, 0.2 to 2 mu m thick on its lower face, a grid-shaped auxiliary cathode 9 made of silver which is separated from the gold or platinum coating by a thin ion-conducting separation layer 8 a silver anode, 4 a gold or platinum cathode and an electrolyte of potassium hydroxide and potassium chloride. The membrane, separation layer and auxiliary cathode preferably constitute a multilayer stack, within the electrolyte chamber 6. The separation layer may be paper for fabric. <IMAGE>
