The scene is projected via motor-driven beam deflectors (25,26) onto a screen (24) carrying rows and columns of opto-electronic image converter chips (23) with inactive areas between pixel sensor gps (22). The motors (29,30) are stepped so that the projection overlaps the pixel sensor gps (22) in successively displaced positions (eg 31,32) and every pixel is projected onto an active area in at least one of these. Brightness and colour values are read out (44), digitised (45) and stored (48) while tests for redundancy and/or completeness are applied by computer (50). Superfluous pixels can be eliminated, and missing ones replaced by interpolation. ADVANTAGE - Pixel resoln sufficient for the printing industry is achievable with direct opto-electronic display using conventional forms and sizes of image converter chip and relatively short exposures.
