The support column according to the invention comprises a succession of catches 4 which can be displaced by the articles themselves, between an inactive end position A in which they are retracted into the support column, and an active end position B in which they project on the support column, the first catch which arrives in its active end position through the action of an article entraining the following catch in an intermediate stand-by position C from which the following article may move it into its active end position. It is characterised in that it comprises locking means capable of coming into engagement with all the catches 4 located in their active end position, in order to immobilize them in this position, it being possible, optionally, for these means to move, into its active end position, the catch which is located in its intermediate stand-by position.
