A containment device (10) for sealing and protecting containers (12A-H; 48A-F) of biological materials. The device (10) comprises a resilient cushion (14; 14A) of aqueous fluid sorbent material (14; 14A) having a plurality of openings (16A-H; 46A-F). Each opening (16A-H; 46A-F) is adapted for receiving a respective container (12A-H; 48A-F) of biological material, and the openings (16A-H; 46A-F) are arranged such that each opening (16A-H; 46A-F) is surrounded by sufficient sorbent material (Y) to sorb leakage of biological material from its respective container (12A-H; 48A-F) if the container (12A-H; 48A-F) and/or if any additional containers (12A-H; 48A-F) break. The device (10) also includes a case (26) of aqueous fluid resistant material (26) for receiving and enveloping the fluid sorbent material (14; 14A). The case (26) includes two generally stiff-flexible portions (28A and 28B) having parts (30A and 30B) adapted for complementary interengagement and adapted to receive tape (32) for sealing the portions (28A, 28B) together to form an air and fluid tight package.
