Machining tool material comprises 2.5-34.0% Ti, 3.7-64.0% Zr and/or Hf, 1-31% Nb and/or Ta, 0.01-1.3% oxygen, 1.2-9.3% C, balance W and impurities. The composition satisfies the atomic relationship [Tiw (Zr, Hf)x(Nb,Ta)yW1-x-y . [OuNvC1-u-z z with the proviso that W/(w+x) =0.3-0.8, w+x+y=0.3-0.8, y=0.01-0.2, u=0.005-0.1 and z=0.2-0.7. The material has three hard phases and a binder phase consisting of high melting point metals represented by W. One of the hard phases is a Ti-based compound, the next a Zr and/or Hf based compound, and the other a Nb and/or Ta based compound. These hard phases have a fine structure.
