The invention relates to an exterior rearview mirror 2 for a motor vehicle, mounted on an exterior part of the bodywork. According to the invention, it is mounted movably between two positions, a rest position in which it is integrated into the profile of the vehicle without projecting, and a working position in which it projects from the vehicle, the displacement of the rearview mirror 2 between these two positions being carried out by means of a device for deploying and blotting out the rearview mirror 2 including a motor 1 acting on the rearview mirror 2 in order to set it into the working position, an electromagnet 3 for maintaining the rearview mirror 2 in the working position and an electrical circuit for controlling the motor 1 and the electromagnet 3 and which is actuated automatically through use of the vehicle.
