The body (56) of the package comprises a flexible laminate (10, 18) having a barrier ply (12, 20) a sealable ply (14, 22), and a hand-peelable seal (68) for the mouth of the package. The seal (68) comprises a strip-like heat-fusible coating (44) on the sealable ply (14, 22) and has, when sealed, sufficient strength to retain vacuum within the package and to withstand stress during handling and shipping. Side walls (58) in the mouth region include gusset portions (64a, b) which are encompassed by the hand-peelable seal (68). The manufacture of the flexible laminate (10, 18) includes printing on the barrier ply (12, 20) and applying the heat-sealable coating (44) to the sealable ply (14, 22) in register with the printing. |
