An antimicrobial composition containing, as a mixture of active ingredients, (A) at least one complex of the formula <IMAGE> wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent hydrocarbyl group, R2 and R3 are each independently a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, M is a metal or ammonium cation, X is a complex-forming anion, a is 1 or 2 and b is an integer which is such that the anion X satisfies the valence of the cation M, and (B) 3,3,4,4-tetrachlorotetrahydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide effectively inhibits the growth of microbes in, for example, industrial water systems for pulp and paper. |
