A process for the production of nitrogen through the low temperature rectification of air, wherein the air is compressed and divided into two sub-streams, of which the first is cooled and supplied to a singe-step rectification stage whilst the second is subjected to secondary compression, cooled, expanded and likewise supplied to the rectification stage, and wherein the nitrogen is obtained from an upper section of the rectification stage, characterised in that before it is supplied to the rectification stage (7) the first sub-stream (5) is brought into heat exchange with sump fluid (11) from the rectification stage (7), that the expansion of the second sub-stream (4) is carried out with the production of work and that at least a part of the work produced by the expansion is used for the secondary compression of the second sub-stream (4).</p> |
