The battery isolator switch according to the invention has a handle for random switching on and off, having a rotation axis which has studs projecting on both sides and can be inserted into a sleeve which is provided with helically running guide slots. A contact supporting bolt with a restoring spring is guided into the switched-on position by a rotary movement of the handle. In the limit position of its studs at the end of the guide slots, the handle is held in a self-locking manner. It can be moved back by initiating a rotary movement in the opposite rotation direction, releasing the restoring spring, which also opens the isolator switch contacts. At least one of the two studs, which may be formed by a lateral pin in the shaft of the handle, projects so far through the sleeve wall that it can be acted on by a force source, for example an explosive cartridge, and initiates the rotary movement of the handle in the switching-off direction. The force source can be initiated by a pulse, as a function of the triggering of a fire detector.
