The drive circuit includes a coupling transformer having primary and secondary windings, one end of the secondary winding being coupled to a base of the transistor for feeding base current into the transistor. The transistor is driven through the primary winding of the transformer. A tap is provided on the secondary winding. A directional element is connected between the tap and the other end of the secondary winding. The directional element is arranged so that a forward base drive current is supplied to the transistor from the one end and the tap of the secondary winding and a reverse base drive current is supplied to the transistor from the one end and the other end of the secondary winding.
