Method and device for improving the conversion efficiency and the directivity of the emission from a solid-state laser diode. The device comprises essentially an outer cavity (18) coupled to the intracavity face (16) of the multiple-stripe (12) semiconductor laser diode (10), via a phase-shifting grating (20) generating a phase shift of pi between each stripe. This cavity is closed by partial and localised reflection means such as a spatial filter (42) and a semitransparent mirror (44) which are arranged so as to reflect only the fundamental mode of the diode and thus permit a monolobe axial emission. <IMAGE>
