<p>Neutron source with a target (16) struck by a hydrogen isotope ion beam and consisting of a structure comprising a thin active absorbent layer (19) produced on a support layer (18). According to the invention, a stack of active layers (21, 23, 25, 27), which are identical with the layer (19) and are separated from one another by diffusion barriers (20, 22, 24, 26) respectively, is placed on top of the two preceding layers. The thickness of each of the said active layers is of the order of the depth of penetration of the deuterium ions striking the target.
