PRODUCTION OF CATALYST SUPPORTING NOBLE METAL

PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst supporting noble metals and having superior characteristics as the methanol electrode of a methanol-air fuel cell by supporting colloidal particles contg. at least Pt on the surfaces of carbon particles, grinding the resulting particles with a ball mill and forming a solid soln. or alloy. CONSTITUTION:NaHSO3 is added to an aq. soln. of chloroplatinic acid and an aq. soln. of H2O2 is dropped to prepare colloidal Pt particles. An aq. soln. of ruthenium chloride is added to the colloidal Pt particles to prepare colloidal Pt-Ru particles. Carbon powder is added to the colloidal Pt-Ru particles and stirred to stick the colloidal particles on the carbon particles. The resulting particles are ground with the ball mill and the solid soln. is formed to obtain a catalyst. This catalyst is mixed with a suspension of polytetrachloroethylene, applied to carbon paper and used as the methanol electrode of a methanol-air fuel cell. The electric potential of the methanol electrode is lowered and the characteristics are improved.
