Two combustion chambers 18 and 19 in the cylinder head 1 are connected to the cylinder 7 through respective transfer passages 20 and 21 and have respective bores 22 and 23 for fuel injectors and respective bore 24 and 25 for igniters, e.g. conventional or surface discharge sparking plugs. The combustion chambers 18, 19 are preferably spherical and of equal volume. A ball 26, 27 or an elipsoid is mounted centrally in each combustion chamber to assist fuel ignition. The balls or elipsoids may be of stainless steel and occupy 5 to 30% of the volume of the combustion chambers. The cylinder head is provided with water cooling chambers (2, Fig. 2, not shown), and inlet and exhaust valves (13, 14) operated by an overhead camshaft (17).</p> |
