A separation vessel for the separation of activated sludge from a waste water/activated-sludge suspension is provided in the centre with a pipe (7) open at the top and closed at the bottom by a base (9), into which pipe, in the vicinity of the base (9), an inlet (10) joined to the feed line (11) for the suspension opens. The central pipe (7) is surrounded at a distance by a second pipe (8) which is open at both ends, terminates beneath the liquid surface (20) and projects above the liquid surface (20) at the other end, as does the central pipe (7).
