[Also in Division B3] A machine for mixing or working rubber, plastics and the like comprises a mixing chamber (18) (Fig. 2, not shown) defined by end frames (12, 13) and side members (16, 17), and rotary processing members (36, 37) journalled in the end frames. Each rotary member includes a shaft 40 having a tapered portion 58. The tapered portion is journalled in a bearing assembly 60, which includes inner races 80, 82 in the form of cones having tapered bores 80a, 82a which are a friction fit on the tapered portion. Annular grooves 74, 75 in the portion 58 communicate respectively with axially extending conduits 76, 77. A shaft 48 of a motor-driven gear reducer is coupled to the shaft 40 by a coupling assembly 52 which comprises externally splined members 70, 120 keyed to their respective shafts and an internally splined member 122. To remove the bearing assembly 60 the two parts 142, 143 of the member 122 are first disconnected and are telescoped over the members 70, 120 respectively. Plate 130 is removed to permit removal of the members 70, 142 through the space between the ends of shafts 40, 48. Retainer 102, lock plate 87, lock nut 64 and oil flinger 85 are then removed. Hydraulic fluid under pressure is introduced through the conduits 76, 77 to the grooves 74, 75 to expand the inner races 80, 82 thus enabling those races to be moved axially. When race 82 has been removed, the race 96 is moved axially along the shaft to the space, and then the race 80 is similarly moved. Assembly may be effected in the reverse order. In a modification in which an integral coupling member 122 is used seal 159, retainer 160, and abutment ring 158 are first removed and the member is moved on to shaft 48. The bearing assembly may be lubricated via passageway 99. A temperature controlled gland 110 is provided. A coolant may be supplied to the interior of the rotary members via unions (45) and pipes (46) (Fig. 2, not shown) and to conduits in the side members via headers (22, 23). A hopper is provided above the chamber, and the chamber also includes a pivoted discharge door (not shown).
