N - Monoisobutyl hexamethylene diammonium sebacate is prepared from N-monoisobutyl hexamethylene diamine and sebacic acid. N,N1 - Diisobutyl hexamethylene diamine is prepared adding isobutyraldehyde to hexamethylene diamine in water, and reducing the Schiff's base so formed.ALSO:Elastomeric fibre-forming copolyamides are produced by heating a lactam with an N-substituted or N,N1-disubstituted aliphatic diamine and an aliphatic a , o -di-carbonylic acid containing at least 5 carbon atoms in the chain or a salt of such a diamine and acid, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, the ratio of reactants being such that 10-34% of the nitrogen atoms in the products are substituted. Lactams specified are S -caprolactam, o -enantholactam and o -capryllactam. The diamine may be of formula RNHXNHR1, where R is a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical, e.g. an alkyl, or aralkyl radical, R1 is a hydrogen atom or one of the radicals specified for R and X may be an alkylene radical of at least 6 carbon atoms. Diamines specified are N-hexadecyl and N N1-diheptyltrimethylene diamine, N - ethyl-, N - isobutyl - N - lauryl, N,N1 - diethyl- and N,N1 - diisobutyl - hexamethylene diamine, N-isobutyl-, N-ethyl-, N - cyclohexyl-, N,N1 - dicyclohexyl-, N,N1-diisobutyl-, and N,N1 - diethyldecamethylene diamine, N,N1 - dipropyldodecamethylene diamine and N,N1 - diethyloctadecamethylene diamine. Acids specified include sebacic, adipic and dodecanedioic. Catalysts specified are acid or neutral catalysts including o -aminoundecanoic acid, metaphosphoric acid, orthophosphoric acid, water and aminocaproic acid. 0.01-2% catalyst may be used. Other additives present may be pigments, plasticizers, delustrants, stabilizers and chain branching agents of which examples are given. The reactants may be contacted in any order, e.g. the lactam may be added to an equimolar mixture of the acid and diamine or to a salt of the acid and diamine during polymerization. The reaction may take place at 250-300 DEG C. under an inert atmosphere. e.g. N2, and optionally latterly under reduced pressure. The products are used to make fabrics for pyjamas, swimwear and foundation garments. In examples, the polymerization is carried out under autogenous pressure in a sealed vessel or under a superatmospheric pressure of nitrogen. In Example (8) the final product is immersed in boiling water to remove any unreacted lactam. |
