PURPOSE:To enable sure focus detection even for a subject of high luminance without entailing the expansion of a circuit scale by forming a memory in such a manner that said memory can be set to the bit number smaller than the resolving power of an A/D converter. CONSTITUTION:This detector has a data processing means 17 which subjects the digital value of M-bit outputted by an A/D converter 140 to digit shifting in the lower direction by as much as the prescribed number of times and extracts the lower N-bit from the shifted digital value of M-bit in case of setting the memory 50 to N-bit with respect to the resolving power of M-bit possessed by the A/D converter 140 and executing processing with the information up to the digit value in excess of the N-bit in the A/D converter 140 when the brightness of the subject exceeds the prescribed luminance. The memory 150 stores the digital value of N-bit extracted by the data processing means 170. The focus detection even for the subject of the high luminance is thereby enabled without entailing the expansion of the circuit scale. |
