Reduction gearing at the rear of the wheelchair operates rollers 6 in opposite directions, thus raising or lowering the seat (24, Fig. 3) as required. The rollers can be manually operated from a central adjusting hub 25 or operated by electric motor using a recharge battery system with a V-belt drive or operated by 'worm-drive' on to the central gear-wheel 19 or operated by a shaft-driven 'worm-drive' direct on to the rollers 6. The wheelchair can lift a legless person from the floor since the seat in its lowest position rests on the floor. Other features disclosed include an elastic return-spring system which acts as a general tensioner 16, (this would not be required with the shaft type 'worm-drive' system), an adjustable backrest 3, a new type of armrest 12, and brakes 8 and 8a.
