Method and apparatus for softening water. The process of the invention consists in aerating water and in heating in order to precipitate rapidly the calcium carbonate dissolved up to a carbonate hardness of less than 6 French degrees. The only reactants necessary for this softening are compressed air (supplied, for example, by a compressor) and heat energy. The aerated water loses its carbon dioxide and tends to precipitate CaCO3. Heating accelerates this precipitation. The invention applies to all waters with a carbonate hardness higher than 6 French degrees. <IMAGE>
