A 2,2 - dialkyl glutaric acid is prepared by oxidizing a 2,2 - dialkyl - 4 - cyanobutyraldehyde with nitric acid in the presence of oxygen but in the absence of sulphuric acid. A catalyst such as metallic copper and ammonium vanadate may be present and the oxygen may be present as air. Examples describe the preparation of 2,2 - dimethyl, and 2 - ethyl - 2 - butyl-4- cyanobutyraldehydes. |
