PURPOSE:To simplify a processing system and to extract segments stably without increasing the number of segments, by making a connection/separation decision between scanning lines on the basis of the mode of the black/white change point of each scanning line. CONSTITUTION:A read pattern of every scanning line from an optical sensor, etc. is inputted to a black/white change detector 1 to detect a black/white change point. On the basis of the black/white change point, the left terminal point of a set (run) of successive black bits on every scanning line is regarded as a start terminal point and the right terminal point is regarded as an end terminal point; those pieces of information are inputted to a run pattern memory 2. A succeeding connection/separation decision device 3 makes a connection/separation decision on the basis of the contents of the memory 2, i.e. the mode of contacting between the current and last scanning lines to extract segments, which are outputted to a pattern memory 4. Consequently, the segment extraction is performed adequately without any increase in the number of segments. |
