<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, etc., in high selectivity at a low cost, by reacting a polyhydric alcohol with ammonia in the presence of a nickel catalyst containing sulfur, selenium, etc. CONSTITUTION:A amino alcohol is produced by reacting a polyhydric alcohol (e.g., ethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol or 1,2-butanediol) with NH3 in the presence of a nickel catalyst containing an element selected from sulfur, selenium, tellurium, arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The catalyst is preferably Raney nickel from the viewpoint of high selectivity of amino alcohol. The atomic ratio of the element added to the nickel catalyst is 0.5-0.001, preferably 0.2-0.002 based on the nickel. The lowering of the catalytic activity can be suppressed by using the catalyst in the presence of hydrogen.</p> |
