A lumpy carbon carrier suitable for forming a fluidised bed or a fixed bed is proposed for the manufacture of crude iron from iron ore. The lumpy carbon carrier used is either a lump coal which tends to disintegrate on shock-like thermal stress and which has been subjected to a pretreatment serving to reduce the disintegration tendency before introduction into the smelting gasifier, or it is a granulated fine coal with added binder, which has been ground down preferably before the addition of the binder. |
