PURPOSE:To prevent direct mixing of hydrogen and oxygen and to realize the operating method of an essentially safety fuel cell by separating a gas sealed in a cathode from air introduced with nitrogen. CONSTITUTION:A fuel gas inlet pipeline 4 and its outlet pipeline 4' are installed in an anode 1, and a fuel gas shut-off valve 4-A is installed in the pipeline 4 in the outside part of a cell vessel 3. An air inlet pipeline 5 and its outlet pipeline 5' are installed in a cathode 2, and an air shut-off valve 5-A is installed in the pipeline 5. A nitrogen inlet pipeline 6 and its outlet pipeline 6' are installed in the vessel 3 and a nitrogen shut-off valve 6-A is installed in the pipeline 6. The downstream of the air shut-off valve 5-A and the upstream of the nitrogen shut-off valve 6-A are connected with a pipeline 7, and a shut-off valve 7-A is installed. A hydrogen detector 8 is installed in the pipeline 5' and its output is inputted in a computer 9. The computer has the function to open the valve 7-A and compares inputted hydrogen concentration with a set hydrogen concentration to open or close the valves 5-A, 7-A. Direct mixing of hydrogen and oxygen is prevented and a safety fuel cell is obtained. |
