An optical recording element comprises a light absorptive layer supported by a dimensionally stable substrate. The layer is uniformly smooth, homogeneous film of polymeric dye having light absorptivity of at least 0.046 in the visible or ir spectrum. The copolymer may be a reaction prod. of aromatic diamine with aliphatic, aromatic diamine with diacid aliphatic chloride or diphenol and hydrocarbly diacid aliphatic or aromatic chloride.
