The composite ground covering is for playing bowls etc. comprises a plastics cover sheet or grille on a base. There is a foundation layer of gravel of 0-80 mm having a thickness of 15-50 cm followed by a levelling layer of crushed rubble of 0-31.5 mm, having a depth of 3-10 cm. This is then covered with a base of gravel of 0-25 mm having a high percentage of hard gravel and from 3-8% wt. of a hydrocarbonated binder, with a thickness of 4-10 cm. There is also a surface layer which is a sandy mixt. of 0-1 mm having a thickness of 2-7 mm. ADVANTAGE - Greater uniformity and less deformation caused by play.
