<p>A process for detecting one or several faulty areas, in particular fissures and/or constrictions on pressed parts or on other workpieces, through optical scanning of their surface has following stages: an illuminating device (16) for the illumination of a surface area of the workpiece (2) and an optical receiving system for the recording of the illuminated surface area or a part thereof are placed in such a way relative to one another or to the surface area of the workpiece that through the reflective properties of faulty areas (23) in said surface area that differ from those of their environment, an image is generated; an image of the surface area with the optical receiving system is recorded spot by spot; for further processing of the recorded image of the surface area, a reference image corresponding to the recorded image without the faulty areas to be detected is generated spot by spot or kept on stand-by in a memory; then the recorded image is compared spot by spot with the reference image and the result is stored spot by spot.
