The piston 10 reciprocates in a cylinder 12 which reciprocates and orbits relative to the transmission 14'', 18'', 20'' which synchronises the piston and cylinder crankshafts. The cylinder may be moved by one, two or four synchronised crankshafts and the piston may be stepped (Figs. 7, 8 and 15). Two and four-stroke engines and a four-stage compressor are described. Hollow crankshafts (Figs 11 to 13) may define passages for charge intake and exhaust and coolant. <IMAGE>
