Melt, pref. of E-caprolactam, passes through 3 sections of continuously operating polymerisation tube, dwell time in first, second and third sections being 20 - 70%, 10 - 40% and 10 - 40% of total, which pref. is is not 14 hr., and temp. 200 - 260, 220 - 280, and 240 - 300 degrees C respectively. For discontinuous autoclave operation, 3 ddifferent pressure stages are used, in which pressure is 0-30, 0-20 and 0-5 kp/cm2. Use of optimum temp. conditions gives product with soln. viscosity of 2.80 - 4.00.
